Magh Purnima माघ पूर्णिमा

Magh Purnima is one the most important and sacred Purnimas in the Hindu religion. The baths in the Magh month begin with the Paush Purnima. Magh purnima is celebrated on Tuesday, 7th February 2012. Donations, charities and Yagyas done on this day are of great importance. Lord Vishnu is worshiped after taking a bath and food, clothes, money etc are distributed among the poor.

It is believed that taking baths in holy rivers on this day relieves a person from all sorts of problems. It is also believed that taking a bath in the Ganga river on this occasion relieves a person from all his sins. Magh month is extremely important in Sanatan dharma. Baths should be taken early morning. This bath is believed to cure diseases also.
Om Namah Bhagvate Vasudevaya Namah should be recited while taking a bath.

Religious Importance of Magh Purnima

According to Brahmavaivartpurana, Lord Vishnu himself resides in river Ganga during Magh month and even a touch of this water takes a person to heaven. According to other Puranas, Lord Vishnu is impressed by donation, charities etc in the same way as he is impressed by baths in river Ganga.

It is believed that Lord Vishnu residesin Kshir Sagar during this month and river Ganga is a form of Kshir Sagar. According to astrology, Magh Purnima occurs when Moon is in Cancer and Sun is in Capricorn sign.

It is believed that taking baths on the day of Magh Purnima relieves a person from all problems related to the Sun and the Moon. This month is believed to be related to Puja, austerities etc. Even Sadhus and Saints consider this month to be very sacred.

माघ पूर्णिमा धार्मिक मान्यता
ब्रह्मवैवर्तपुराण में उल्लेख है कि माघी पूर्णिमा पर स्वंय भगवान विष्णु गंगाजल में निवास करतें है अत: इस पावन समय गंगाजल का स्पर्शमात्र भी स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति देता है इसी प्रकार पुराणों में मान्यता है कि भगवान विष्णु व्रत, उपवास, दान से भी उतने प्रसन्न नहीं होते, जितना अधिक प्रसन्न माघ स्नान करने से होते हैं.

माघ मास के संदर्भ में कहा जाता है कि इस तिथि में भगवान नारायण क्षीर सागर में विराजते हैं तथा गंगा जी क्षीर सागर का ही रूप है. ज्योतिष के अनुसार जब कर्क राशि में चन्द्रमा और मकर राशि में सूर्य का प्रवेश होता है तब माघ पूर्णिमा का योग बनता है इस योग को पूण्य योग भी कहा जाता है.

धार्मिक मान्यता है कि माघ पूर्णिमा में स्नान करने से सूर्य और चन्द्रमा युक्त दोषों से मुक्ति प्राप्त होती है. यह महीना जप-तप व संयम का महीना माना गया है इस महीने तामसी प्रवृत्ति के लोग भी सात्विकता को अपना लेते हैं, ऋषि मुनियों ने भी माघ मास में मांस भक्षण को निषिद्व कहा है |
